Good Goals vs God Goals

I started making plans for 2021 in December: setting goals, writing visions, budgeting, and planning for the year ahead. On the heels of 2020, I’ve been hopeful, but also hesitant.

Hopeful that the year ahead would be full of restoration and revival, but hesitant to move forward when there’s still so much mystery—still so many questions and unknowns in my personal life, as well as the rest of the world.

With these thoughts overshadowing my mind, I questioned the validity of setting specific goals. How could I make goals and plans when I was so unsure of what the year would hold?

In this moment I had a “God thought” or more like a God question. You know those subtle whispers that race across your mind from out of nowhere? It’s the prompting of the Holy Spirit. It’s a God thought.

This was the question: Are you creating good goals or God goals?

I’ve literally never asked myself this question, so it stopped me mid-thought.

Was I making plans and creating goals based on what I thought was good or what I knew was God? Was I creating a vision shaped by my own desires or letting God shape them for me?

Good goals will only produce a good outcome, but God will always produce a God outcome.

Good goals won’t endure the unknown, unexpected, or out of my control, but God goals will. God goals will endure any circumstance, situation, or trial, because they’re based in God, and God is always good.

A God goal is created from a biblical framework with eternity in mind. It’s not carnal, temporary, or fueled by selfish ambition.

Here are a few good goals vs God goals:

Save More Money < Give More

Lose Weight < Steward My Temple

Read More Books < Read More Bible

Plan More < Pray More

And the list goes on.

I’ve reevaluated all of my 2021 goals through this question: are they good or are they God?

If they’re good that’s okay, but if they’re God that’s great.

So, what about your goals? Good or God?
